Oof. I didn't realise how difficult sanding maple wood is until actually working on the board. It took me an hour and a half (I think) this evening to sand my longboard down to barewood. Even then, I was only really able to remove the old paint and polyurethane. Don't worry, I'm not killing myself — I wore a NIOSH-certified mask thingy and occasionally vacuumed my workspace for dust. Even with the 5″ orbital sander, it still look me a while to strip off the stuff.
Because I'm impatient (instead of waiting until tomorrow), I decided to stain the board this evening as well. It turned out beautifully and I cannot wait until tomorrow when I wipe another coat 😉
